(Finally) Releasing Sundermead!

Tuesday, October 3, 2023

Greetings, everyone! I'm thrilled to announce a significant milestone in my game development journey - the official release of my game, Sundermead, on Steam! The game will be available for you to enjoy starting October 3rd.

For those who have been following along on my Discord channel, you're already in the loop. But to those who are new here, a warm welcome!

If you're unfamiliar with Sundermead, let me give you a quick rundown. Sundermead is an open-world RPG featuring procedurally generated landscapes. Your mission is to build a thriving community on this unique island. At the launch, there will be 8 characters available for you to invite, each with their own questlines, distinct behaviors, and personalities. Build relationships with them, trade items, and immerse yourself in a world where every character has a story to tell.

The concept for Sundermead originated from my enjoyment of Stardew Valley while playing with my girlfriend. I admired the peaceful farming aspects combined with questing and rich character development. However, I felt constrained by Stardew Valley's relatively small map and 2.5D design. This led me to envision a fusion of Minecraft and Stardew Valley, giving birth to Sundermead. After two and a half years of development, I'm excited to share the result with you.

Sundermead is set to launch in early access, but fear not; it's not your typical early access title with missing features. In fact, Sundermead is feature complete! The reason for opting for early access is simple – I plan to introduce additional characters to the game. I have a few in mind, but I want to involve the community in expanding the roster. This way, you can contribute your character ideas and designs, enhancing the diversity of the in-game community.

Key features of Sundermead include a procedurally generated island, a comprehensive farming system with over 30 crops, terrain landscaping, a dynamic day-night cycle, combat against enemies, mining, boss battles, and, most importantly, cooperative multiplayer supporting up to 4 players.

You might have noticed that Sundermead is developed in Unity. If you've been following recent discussions in the indie game development community, you're aware of the controversy surrounding Unity's decision to charge developers based on game installations. While I'm not overly concerned due to certain thresholds that need to be met, I've also been exploring Godot, just to be prepared.

Sundermead is set to launch on October 3rd with a special 15% discount, bringing the price down from £15 to £12.75. For other currency conversions, I'll display them on the screen.

If Sundermead captures your interest, I invite you to dive into the adventure, play the game, and share your feedback. Whether you love it or have suggestions for improvement, your insights are invaluable. Leave a review or join my Discord server – all the links are conveniently placed in the description.

Thank you for your time, and I look forward to seeing you on the enchanting island of Sundermead!
